writes:Hi,Just a quick question been on the oral contraceptive pill 4 like 4 years now, and never ever miss a pill! The past two months i've been overlapping my pills so i wouldn't get a period. This month however i overlapped my pill not expecting a period but got one anyway, it wasn't too heavy but 4 a few days i did have to wear a tampon. I carried on taking the pill and it still hasn't stopped. I also had sex while this was happening. Can the contraceptive pill stop working? Or is it just my body wanting a period because it hasn't had one 4 3months? Seriously panicking because obviously i had sex and worried about pregnancy and such

hmm i think you should ask the doctor, i know that its is ok to overlap, there is no real reason not to so there shouldn't have been a problem

There are a few things that could be going on here. The most likely one is that it will simply take time for your periods to stop. They usually won't go away immediately, its more of a fade. The other possibility is that you are having the same side effects I did. When a birth control was supposed to stop my period, it actually prolonged it. I would have a very light, but unstopping period for six months. Then I would't bleed for about a week or two, then I'd go another six months of constant tampons. It was awful. I started having problems with anemia, and feeling kind of "bleh" all the time. If you find your periods getting longer, I suggest you stop skipping the sugar pills. It really isn't a great idea anyway. Its not how they were designed to be used. There are other forms of birth control that often aleviate you of your period that you could try. You might look into the three month shot.
As for birth control pills losing their effectiveness, I don't think that is possible unless they are old. But I'm not 100% positive. Maybe someone else will know for sure.

The bleeding you experience on BC pills isn't menstrual bleeding to begin with-it's withdrawal bleeding. It's entirely a chemical reaction. As for "abusing" pills? You're not. Lots of women do the same thing in order to skip their "periods." There hasn't been any research to show this is dangerous. You're probably experiencing breakthrough bleeding. This is usually bleeding that is caused in between periods-while on active pills. You're probably experiencing it because you've changed your regimen. It isn't that unusual to bleed when changing pills or changing your regimen. It's also called "spotting"-and considering you said it wasn't, that's probably what it was.I really wouldn't worry too much and if you're that paranoid, if the spotting doesn't stop in a couple of months, I'd suggest going back to your old regimen.
