A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Please please please don't reject my question, I've looked everywhere and can't find any help or answers and I need help! My question isn't about sex, love or relationships this time, its about hair. But I've asked personal health questions on here before and they've been approved and answered (which I appreciate)! Ok so my natural color is light/medium brown, well I've been coloring it for several years now at home with boxes of hair color plus going to the salon. I've dyed it multiple colors but now I stick with medium brown. My only problem is every time it fades to a brassy orange color where the coloring was and then my brown roots are showing through. Overall I'd like to just let my hair grow out so I have my natural color again and I won't be damaging my hair by coloring it so much.. So is there ANYTHING AT ALL I can do, any shampoos or something maybe, that will take that brassy color out of my hair leaving it looking more brown while I let it grow out for however many months it may take? Thank you for your answers! They're much appreciated!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (9 October 2011):

there is a special type of purple/violet shampoo that is for blonde hair to stop it from going brassy, that may work, otherwise just use a temporary dye that washes out every few weeks, or a colour shampoo, or tie your hair up in a messy bun so the colour is not obvious, or cut out all the coloured bits.

So_Very_Confused agony auntgo to the salon and have them strip all the color out and then lay on a color that's close to your natural color

avoid over washing and chlorine..

aunt honesty agony auntGo to your hair dresser and ask her to strip the dye out of your hair. Then I guess if there are still brassy tones you will just need to find a hair dye that match's your natural colour and use that until it grows out.

If you can find it, use "henara" brown henna shampoo, it will leave your hair looking brown, then when your ready, after using a different shampoo about 3 times, your hair will be natural again. I did this when growing out my hair! X

I suggest:

Temporarily cut your hair shorter to instantly remove as much of the 'brassy' orange as possible.

And/or

Dye your hair with a semi-permanent colour as close to your natural colour as possible.

Keep trimming your hair over the next few months until all the old brassiness has gone - you will be able to tell because the semi-permanent dye will wash out after about 3-4 weeks.

When it is all gone, stop dying your hair with the semi-permanent.

Then, if you want to re-grow it to its original length, then do so.

Another tip is, if your hair is long enough, to wear it "up" as much as possible - this will not entirely disguise re-growth "roots" but it will soften the effect overall.

This will all be much easier if you go to a professional hairdresser.
