writes:I have friend who 53, she is a single mother and I have known her for 10 years. She is stunning and easily taken for 30'sh. We both decided long ago that we didn't want a romantic relationship with anyone anymore and have been happy with a close, platonic and integrated friendship. It is a great relationship but there is one thing which puzzles me. She is always doing the best she can to look more and more stunning and likes to flirt with swarthy waiters and the like whilst we are on holiday together, but maintains she is not interested in having a relationship with anyone and it's just fun. Do you think she really means it ?

reader, anonymous, writes (29 June 2007): Many people have the impression after a certain age their time has set and don't believe in a chance to rebuilt their lives. Could be that why she doesn't consider a new relationship, if that's what you seek. At this mature age, you don't have this playful behaviour, prefering rather a good friendship without teasing and other such, and what follows is a product of the closeness, you don't believe in physical attraction as rather in a soul who will understand yours...
The age brings more subtlety, so I don't think she means to flirt, especially if you find it obvious, paradoxically I'd say! I'd continue meeting her and see about that soul-connection...

 It means alot to women of that age to look good, especially with the amount of pressure around to look good, every day we open magazines and papers and see beautiful women staring back at us, so if we look that good at that age i think you should make use of it a bit of flirting is harmless and it can get you so many things in life, so let her go for it and just be proud to have this women with you.

 She's probably just having fun! She's single, she's allowed to flirt around and get some guys to chase her!!
