Is my depression coming back?

A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Dear all,

I have finished university been there for 4 years and got a Masters in Engineering with a upper second class. I have a few proper close friends, male and female. I have held the same part-time job for 2 years now which supports my weekly expenses. I have a lovely family and fam friends.

All this and I'm unhappy. Sounds selfish. I have battled depression 3 years ago and I think its coming back. I don't know what's wrong. I never abused drugs. I don't make an effort with contacting friends, I have lost the temptation to listen to music, read books, watch films, basically I have been feeling down lately.

Is all of this because I'm less pressured now that I have finished my studies and half the people I know are going back home, or am I having a relapse. Advice very much appreciated.

Thank u in advance.

Daisy_Daisy agony auntHello,

Well done on getting your masters.

I think that sometimes its easy to feel down after something changes in life (even a degree you couldn't wait to finish); things have changed and there are uncertainties. I finished a PhD last year and it's taking me ages to settle in to a different life with less structure and slightly hazier goals.

Have you got a job lined up? Something else to look forward to like a holiday?

I know how hard it is to find motivation to do things when feeling depressed but also know that it's vital. Even if you feel you have to force yourself, putting one foot in front of another will help.

How did you get out of your depression 3 years ago? Could you try the same again?

If it's a recurring pattern, you might consider going to your GP and asking for a referral for cognitive behavioural therapy. It helps change negative patterns and it might be really beneficial for you.

All the best, I hope things work out for you.

cute angel agony auntHey I am going to be in the exact same position as in you in exactly 4 months, where half the people I know are going back..

And I'v gotten soo close to them and not having them around is going be soo wierd, but we r going to be done with university and work for a living..that's the harsh truth life that we have to live with..

I think may be when u start working, and meet people from different walks off life you will eventually move and get over this phase..and I'm sure you will:) be strong..

Take care x
