A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Ok, Here is my story, although I know this subject has been brought up a lot, It has and is really affected me, I am 33 and I look 23, if that. I dress well, nice make up, hair etc, but I have an extremely young looking face, not just young but the eyes, face all look soooo young. I know this as well, because I see pictures of myself and videos and think, my goodness, is that me, I look about 12! I am also small in height 5,1, but it is my face that does it, no matter what make up (yes have had it done professionally as well)

I mean wherever I go, if someone says how old are you, (because I mention something that would make me 15 years ago) and I say 33, they go into shock, "No way, I thought you were about 21, 23 at the most"

I feel like I haven't grown up in a way, I live in a shared house with a 24 year old (she took me in 2 years ago, after a bad break up) she was a friend of a friend and it was meant to be temporary, but 2 years on and 33, I am still living in the spare room, I am planning on trying to get on with life, grow up, I am moving to go to University next year for a year, to do a PGCE, to become a secondary teacher.. This also scares me, as I look so young and act it, I think the kids will not take me seriously, I went to the school other day and I looked like the GCSE kids, even the sixth formers looked older than me. I am hoping that I will grow up more when I do become a teacher that it will bring out a new side to me.

I guess I need to think so what if I look very young and act it and people are shocked by my age... who cares...

But I do

Thanks for your advice

Hey I'm a highschooler and from my experience the younger teachers are the coolest, and though we are less formal and more jokey with them, we also tend to like and respect them the most. You'll have no issues :)

A reader, anonymous, writes (15 September 2009):

I actually think your youthful looks could work to your advantage. The students you teach might feel more able to talk to you and relate to you better, because of you looking younger. You will probably seem less intimidating and formal in their eyes!

When I was at school, there were some female teachers who looked very young. They looked like they were one of us srudents! But the people in my class actually got on better with them than some of the other teachers, maybe because they assumed the young looking teachers were more on their wavelength.

So I think a big part of this could be about trying to adjust the way you look at it. Instead of focusing on the possible disadvantages, why not try focusing on the possible advantages, like some of the ones I have mentioned?

And you are not alone with looking younger. People tell me all the time that I look about 14. They say that to my older sister too, and she has got three kids! It can be annoying, I know. I guess it's the same for people who look and act older than their age. I know someone who is always told that they look much older than their age, and it actually really upsets them. So I think, as hard as it can be, you have to try and ignore any negative comments. Maybe people are even jealous, and would really like to know the secret to your youthful looks? Who knows?

I hope it all goes well, good luck! x
