A female reader, anonymous, writes (12 May 2008):

Hello,

I am 41 years old and I have had the "thin" problem all my life.

I don't care for sweets, except in soda.

I don't eat sweets with my teeth because it hurts them...I have all my own teeth.

Lately and again, I've lost my appetite and am losing weight again.

I'm 5'7". I was five-eight in high school. I'm down to 117 and want to be 125lbs.

So, I've found that smoking a doobie or even a tiny bit of one makes me what to eat like a maniac. EAT!

I've been doing a lot of push-ups/crunches/fight-work to try to increase my appetite. I just keep getting more tired. Pardon the poor grammar.

I just keep getting skinnier until I look like some creepy skeleton-lady or something.

It's not very pretty and I think I look terrible. I want to have more meat on my bones!

I’m 15 years old and underweight I am 5ft tall but I look like a stick I hate the way I look and I eat lots of food and gain no weight. It seems to me our not giving your body the right nutrients and skipping meals isn’t healthy if you are only skinny because you don’t eat often this isn’t doing you any favours ,eating three meals a day isn’t going to make you add weight dramatically take me for example I eat 3 meals a day and the equivalent to 2 meals in small snacks healthy and unhealthy(balanced diet ) , if you do find you add weight cause your metabolism might not be fast then you can all ways keep active to look the way you want but not fuelling your body can cause serious health problems in the long run!.

not nesasarily but you maybe heading that way just eat your three meals a day even if your not hungry just to make sure dont worry we both have the same problem and it is good getting the comments but trust me you dont put on weight through just them three meals and you feel healthier and more energetic.

I'm not quite sure.....

I'm sort of in the same boat as you....

I eat healthy, three good meals a day, and am active

i looked a chart and it said that for 5'0 and a small frame i should be between 104-113 pouns or something. I am 80 pounds and about 25 pounds under weight. But that doesn't mean i'm healthy or have an eating disorder. My mom was the same way when she was my age. it all has to do with heredity. i also have a very fast metabolism

i still think you should eat three healthy meals a day though, and get at least 8 hous of sleep a night (I know you didn't mention sleep, but it's a factor) Also if your under a lot of stress or suffered a great loss, that causes appetite and weight loss.

talk to an adult (parents, doctor, etc.).

well, i hope this helps

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (20 December 2006):

DrPsych agony auntI don't think you have an eating disorder, but I think you are 'at risk' of an eating disorder. This is because being extra thin is important to you and you miss meals - these are factors that have been shown to important to girls who later go on to develop anorexia nervosa. People are thin for all sorts of medical reasons as well as genetics and behavioural factors. If it really bothers you, see a doctor for a blood test to exclude metabolic abnormalities. However, you need to ask yourself some searching questions about your current weight situation - you may have not been prepared to accept that you have a problem with eating and weight management up until now. If you think you have a problem then seek professional help - restricting food can cause all sorts of health problems such as osteoporosis, terrible skin, organ failure and fertility problems in later life. As a basic precaution you should try to take a good multivitamin every day and try to arrange mealtimes with your family so you feel that eating is a social activity not a basic need to solve hunger.

If you are happy then what is your problem but if you are worried then get checked out at the doctors. But Hey, some kids would love to be like you. Stop worrying and enjoy being thin.

Take care and have a great Christmas

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 December 2006):

I also am underweight for my height/size. I'm 5 feet, 6.5 inches tall, and my skeleton is small framed. However, my max weight this summer was 122 pounds. Max weight ever was 130 pounds. Average weight is 114 pounds.

This mind you, is due to a natural medical condition I have since my dad's sperm squiggled into my mom's egg over 27 years ago. Mind you, I also have other things that triggered a reaction from my family doctor to send me out for tests. Let's just say 8 pints of blood wasn't exactly fun for a 17 year old at the time, when I only weighed barely 105.

Ask your doctor, if it's possible you have an extra chromosome, or like you said, an eating disorder. If not, great. If so... 8[

A female reader, LISAG +, writes (19 December 2006):

LISAG agony auntI am "supposedly" underweight for my height too. I have a very high metabolism. Some of us are born lucky and take our biological makeup from our parents. I am slightly concerned that you love people commenting on your slimness, but then again I have had these comments all my life too (I'm 34 now,) I eat large regular meals which could never be viewed as me "watching what I eat".

How underweight are you exactly ??? You are only young and may well fill out a bit yet anyway. Be careful that you don't get addicted to the "nice" comments. There are plenty of more important things in life to be complimented upon.

Eating a healthy and well balanced diet is essential, but as long as you are not going hungry or even a little bit hungry then I wouldn't worry too much.

The above advice is maybe a good idea as I don't know anything about thyroid problems, but I would take a look at the rest of your family and if they are all thin and eat normally then I suspect you are blessed with a high metabolism.
