Hi. I have to have a dermoind ovarian cyst out by surgery. it is 4cms by 4cms. It will need to be taken out either by keyhole or open surgery depending on if they can get to it by keyhole surgery. I am terrified of genral anesthic, and teriified of having to have an oeration in hospital, as I have never had one before, and never had to saty overnight etc. I have no choice but to have it out, or it could rupture in the future, so I am lucky they found it during a scan. Has anyone had this operation? What's it like? is there a lot of pain afterwards? What are the risks? Thanks - Natx

sarcy24 agony auntI have had a few operations under general anaesthetic and really there is nothing at all to worry about. The consultant will go through everything with you and then the anaesthetist will come and talk through the procedure and then the nurse will make sure you are ok with everything. You may also get a pre-med which is a liquid which makes you feel happy, drowsy and totally unbothered about the situation. When you are ready you will either go on a trolley, walk or go in a wheel chair to the operating theatre. The anaesthetist will make a slight prick in the back of your hand , pop in some fluid and you will go to sleep immediately. it is instantaneous and you will feel absolutely nothing. Sometimes a warm feeling as the drug enters your body. When you come round you may feel slight pain which the nurse will control or you will control by yourself from a machine, or you may not need this and get an injection in your bottom for pain instead. Some people can manage with just strong tablets. You will feel sleepy for a while and some people feel a little sick but this is all dealt with easily.

Staying overnight in a hospital will be fine as you will feel very tired and just want to rest. If you are having private treatment or in some hospitals you will have your own room or two to a room and it will be quiet. You will have to pick your meals from a list. The consultants will do their rounds and then you will be able to go home. Although i haven't had the operation you are going in for I have been told it is a simple straightforward keyhole operation which does not take long. Having had a number of ops and been involved with many there really is nothing to worry about. just make sure you ask any question at all that you are worried about and ask it again if you want to as the consultants are quite used to this and will want to put you at your ease. Best of luck, I will be thinking of you.
