I'm terrified that by texting or IM'ing him, I'm annoying him, so I never initiate conversation. I know I'm just shooting myself in the foot by doing so, but I'd rather have him as a distant friend, than to annoy him into forgetting me forever. There's nothing I want more than to be with him, but alas, this seems like it can never happen. This depresses me so much, it hurts.

If a boyfriend, Just get a plan to be alone with him and ask him out.
If you want to be friends with him, try to find something in common and talk about that
