I just feel fed up all the time. It's as if a light has gone out and i can't get it back. My bloke is great, but i just cannot pull out of this black hole. People say go to the doctors but i dont want to be on some long term anti depressants and end up like a zombie. I've seen people like this before and they end up worse!

Help, what can i do. I've tried exercise, dancing around, trying to get interested in a new hobby, but i just feel so down. help someone please. cos life just doesn't feel like worth living right now.

Jenny Wren agony auntI just wanted to add that if you do decide to try medication in addition to the things you are already doing to help (exercise etc), bear in mind that if one type of medication doesn't seem effective, or has unpleasant side effects (eg; sedation), there are lots of others you could try which might be better for you. It is best for the doctor and you if you can give accurate feedback on what the medication is doing; what suits one person may not suit another.

Incidentally, you don't have to see a Psychiatrist to get antidepressants; certainly in the U.K. your family doctor will try their best to find a medication that will work for you, and only refer you to a Psychiatrist if they run out of ideas or feel out of their depth and need a specialist opinion.

livi agony aunthey there,

Everyone gets down once in a while you are not alone there my friend. the trick is to ballance things out, instead of looking at life as one big problem, take it day by day.

set yourself a certain amount of time dedicated to just you to do what ever you want to relax, but do not put too much pressure on yourself to have achived this, allowing yourself to unwind is vital. Also, walk away from the things that could be causing you to be upset, if it is your surroundings for example, perhapse take a holiday to unwind and chill out. Good luck in the process. :D

A male reader, honeyross United Kingdom +, writes (23 March 2007):

honeyross agony auntDon't feel as if anti-depressants will turn you into a dependent 'zombie'. A lot of the time, they lift you out of a negative-thinking loop so that your mind can develop more positive patterns.

Once you have developed the new thinking and behaviour, the drugs can be withdrawn. The best plan is to see a psychiatrist, allow something to be prescribed, then go for therapy (cognitive behaviour therapy is especially effective in tackling depression).

Then you can look at any possible issues which might have led to you feeling the way you do.

Best of luck!

Okay, well I don't know what type of medicines you have seen people on, but its not anti-depressants. If it is, they need to switch. I have been on anti-depressants for over 12 years. I suffer from chronic depression. I can tell you that I AM NOT a zombie. I walk around hyper most of the time. They don't change who you are, they just help stabilize your moods.
