I'm extremely insecure and self conscious and its affecting my life

A female Serbia age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'm extremely self-conscious and insecure, so much that it's sometimes stopping me from expressing opinions and feelings even to members of my closest family. I can barely look people in the eye and feel lousy most of the time I spend with them. After ending a conversation, I obsess about things I said and the way I said them for hours. I often feel embarrassed and worthless (not to mention ugly, fat, clumsy, disgusting, stupid, slow etc.)

The only person I can be myself around is my younger brother but he's often busy or not appropriate to talk with - we argue a lot and don't share common interests... I even suck at making online friendships. All in all, I'm friendless and very lonely. Part of me wants to meet new people but I'm in fear of being hurt again and not sure how would I deal with it. I'm 21 and feel like my life is over. Any advice?

A male reader, anonymous, writes (25 February 2009):

Hey, im a dude. and i feel the same way about myself almost word for word. Im 20 years old and I live in chicago. I have a great job and im going to school for web design. I believe i have good future ahead of me. I just want to get past this overwhelming self conscious attitude that i have struggled with all through high school (maybe even a little grade school, cant remember.) Although I read the other response. I feel like the answer should be more clear to me and somewhat breath taking. until then all i can say is, im getting better. When i moved out to the city i met people thinking that they were way "cooler" "hansomer" (prettier in ur case)... once i got to know them, i realized they were the same as me ( a twenty year old kid, that moved to chicago in the past year )

note:

i agree with the whole self image thing in the previous response "I just think you have gotten too much used to your own selfimage that you are not happy with..." 100%

this might make sense... I actually have an older brother "Scotty" i can tell he has some of the same insecurity issues that i do. it helps me be myself around him. we laugh and have fun. haha, like two months ago i came up with this method: Whenever i feel any sense of insecurity while around people i just imagine bein with my brother haha.(you dont have to close your eyes or anything ha) it actually helped but i kind of forgot about it. Maybe im cured!!

My names matt.

email me if this helped at all. ( [email address blocked] )

or gave you a feeling of joy.

When i read the original question in the first place i got a little case of the goosebumps joy feeling. idk. haha

I dont know how i found this site, thanks google. haaa
