Dear all,

I haven't been officially diagnosed, but I'm 99% sure that I suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder. On top of this, I think I have a pretty obsessive personality and I really don't like change. As a result, I end up losing control of myself on some occasions and my emotions totally overwhelm me. But because it's based on anxiety, instead of crying or being angry, I have panic attacks, can't sleep and make myself sick.

It's happened quite a few times over the last few years, before exams, presentations, performances, parties, even going to school, but I worry more about the social side of these than anything. It even happened when the last Harry Potter book came out (I'm a huge fan) where I seemed to have a temporary eating disorder. I'm not even sure why I feel so nervous or sick. I think the fear of having a panic attack or being ill drives my emotions more than the actual situation. I just become obsessed with it and lose control of myself.

Anyway, the first signs of it happening again have started. I'm really worried that it'll develop into 2/3 weeks of panics and making myself ill. Does anyone else experience something like this? Or does anyone have any advice as to how I can calm myself down and prevent it from getting out of hand again?

Thanks in advance.

i have a disorder and part of it is called dissociative movements and everytime i get into a stressful situation i have paralysis seizures where i cannot move my arms of legs. it may be a good thing to see a doctor as they can give you a proper diagnosis i wanted to describe my situation as it is not the same yet it is similar and you are not alone xx

Yes, I think lately that have some social anxiety. i go blank sometimes when new people talk to me, get flustered, and just feel that I can't relax anf be myself. Before social events I have to self medicate with wine. i realy am considering going to the doctor to get on something for a little while to relearn new ways of relating to people and life. I think this anxiety has held me back from trying new things, meeting new people, and living life to the fullest. It's no way to live.....I suggest talking to your doctor if you think this is limiting your life. it has made me very avoidant and I just don't want to be hindered by it anymore. Good luck!!

aunt honesty agony auntI think the best thing that you can do is to go to your doctor to ask for advice and what you should do. I am sure they can give you tips on how to relax in these situations. Another good thing would be to go to a hynotherapist. They can teach you how to keep yourself calm.

ok first of all, you should consult your doctor. I have been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder that bring about panic attacks. i went throught everything u have just described and it was ruining my life. i had to consult a psychiatrist before having medication prescribed to me. they have given me zoloft and i can tell u that it changed my life. My anxiety was causing me huge inconveniences and i couldnt go out anymore.. even doing the groceries or going to the movies was becoming a nightmare. with the proper medication my fear completely went away about 3 months after and now its been 2 years panic attack free with the occasional anxiety. apart from the medication learn to 'breath' and focus on keeping calm. i know its hard when ur having an attack but do it when u dont have one .. .so that when u do u can use that technique. and last of all dont try to get out of this alone... things will just get worse.. and i know some people dont understand what your going through and it can be tough. and remember that you are not alone and there is a solution. just remember to consult.
