Hey I've just got a simple hair question.I like my hair straight but I don't want to lose the natural waviness it has. So my question is, if you overstraigten it (or over the years as you keep straigtening it) does it lose its natural waviness? And has anyone got any tips on how to keep your hair healthy? How many times a week should you straigten before it becomes damaged?

citris agony auntThe only things that will change your hair are chemicals(dyes, perms, chemical straightening, etc) These are not permanant. However, over time, your hair can change in texture and color. Obviously some people go gray, others experience a change around the time of puberty. My hair went from being very wavy when I was little to VERY VERY curly when I was about 15. If you straighten your hair every day (as I do) it's a good idea to follow a routine that includes the following:

Once a week use a clarifying shampoo to rid your hair of excess crud and keep your scalp clean. Do not shampoo your hair every day, every other day is preferable as this will keep from drying your hair out, stripping it of it's natural oils and exposing it to the straightening process.

Use a moisturizing conditioner meant for your hair type.

Use a leave in styling/heat protector or leave in conditioner meant for heat styling every time you dry your hair and straighten it.

If you do not blow dry your hair and instead let it dry naturally that is preferable as you will be exposing your hair to less heat, styling and damage.

Use products that you find work best for you, DO NOT overuse or use too much of a product as it can weigh your hair down, make it greasy and dull the shine.

Have the ends of your hair trimmed about every 2 months or more frequently depending on what you feel is necessary to keep the ends neat, clean and from devoloping split ends that will fray and cause hair to be frizzy.

I've been using these "rules" for years. I do not straighten my hair every day, about one evening a week I leave it alone and let it be curly just to kind of give it a break, sometimes if I have nothing going on, and can get away with it I will do this more frequently, however with the hairstyle i have now it doesn't look good curly, I just look like I'm wearing a dead poodle on my head! lol

Every time I go in to have my hair trimmed my stylist raves about what great condition my hair is in for someone who treats it so much(I also currently dye my hair and have in the past used chemical straighteners, bleaches, etc.)

enjoy your hair!
