Hello everyone .. i'm 19 attending a community college for a 2nd yr now and i'm studying to be a physical therapist and for now i'm doing my basics but .. i'm having a hard time with anatomy and physiology.. i failed the 1st time i took the course with a D because i was working full time to pay for school and now i'm taking it again minus the working .. and i have a D...No matter how hard i try i can't seem to get it all to stick i find it a tad overwhelming . i'm beginning to think that maybe its not for me but i hate giving up so easily and give anatomy and physiology the satisfaction that its hard ..because its not ..its just a lot to know . so my question is would it look horrible on my college transcripts to have me take a course a 3rd time to a university?

Hello-

I used to work in a registrar's office in California. In California, when a class is repeated, the grade is replaced so your transcript only shows the new grade. The old grade may appear, but there will be an asterik by it alerting those who read it to see the revised grade. Taking a class more than once does not look bad, it shows your dedication to truly understanding the topic!

Keep working hard and you'll do it.

FloridaCatGirl agony auntDon’t give up!!! When I got out of high school, I went to college, but spent little time studying… but excelled in the social arena! LOL. As a result, my grades were pathetic. I took some time off and moved back home. Once I got my priorities in check, I went back to school and graduated with all A’s and one B.

Here are some tips that I learned the hard way:

NEVER miss class. One night, I tripped over a laundry basket in the dark… and fractured my elbow. Regardless, I went to class BEFORE I went to the doctor. If I can go to class with a broken arm… you should be able to attend class as well. It’s that important. Also, if they offer study sessions… GO!

Sit in the front. You will be less distracted by others.

Read the chapter before the lecture.

Record your class. Whenever I had a difficult class, I would record the lecture, and write down EVERYTHING the teacher said.

Review your notes daily.

If you don’t understand something… go to the professor’s office and ask for help. In fact, you should probably go talk to the professor at the beginning of the semester. Let him know you are repeating this class… and need HELP. Never be embarrassed to ask questions!

If you HAVE to work full time… you shouldn’t take any other classes except Anatomy and Physiology.

Personally, I don’t recommend studying in a group. People just end up talking and wasting time that would be better spent reviewing notes on your own. If you don’t understand something… you need to ask the prof to explain it to you.

If there is more than 1 professor teaching a course… use the website RateMyProfessors to choose the BEST rated professor.

Get a schedule book… set aside study time… and stick to it!

If possible, review old tests (hopefully, you kept them!!!).

Obviously, your current study methods are not working. If you don’t make drastic changes, I guarantee you will get another D… or worse. You will have to devote much more time to this class then you have in the past. Best of luck!!!

Tisha-1 agony auntGetting a good grade the third time around would indicate that perhaps you had other issues when you took the courses the first time.

Is this the only course you've ever had this much trouble with? Is it possible you have a learning disability or other issue preventing you from absorbing and remembering the material? Could it be study habits or how you are trying to learn the material? Maybe you need to join a study group for this class.

I honestly couldn't tell you if taking it a third time would be a red flag to a college admissions officer but taking it twice with an F and a D isn't exactly great either. I think taking it three times would demonstrate just how persistent and resolute you are. But you have to change the way you've been approaching the subject matter, as obviously whatever you've been doing isn't working for you. If I were you, I'd go into the guidance office at the community college or go to the professor and have a long talk about what they think is your best course of action.

A friend of mine teaches anatomy and physiology for pre-meds and she has some students that just aren't cut out for the course. She's very good and will take the time to talk to them if they come in for help. You go talk to your professor and see what he or she has to say.

Good luck, and I hope you get the chance to pursue your dream!
