If a woman has a ring on the ring finger of her left hand is she necessarily engaged or married, regardless of the style of ring (apart from something obviously temporary, like a Hula Hoop or something out of a cracker)?

I would say yes, if she isn't married or engaged then she shouldn't wear the ring on her wedding finger. x

I'm single but I sometimes wear my favourite ring on that finger, only because the finger on my right hand is slightly bigger and the ring pinches.

I wear a ring on my left ring finger, and I have for years but I have never been married. To tell you the truth though, I started wearing it so that customers at my job wouldn't hit on me, it didn't help. But I still wear it now even though I am no longer working.

YummyMummy agony auntI am wearing a ring my dad got me for my 21st on my left hand on my ring finger at the moment as due to being pregnant my fingers have swelled slightly and it no longer fits my right hand.

But its the only time I have ever worn a ring on that finger, and once the swelling goes down it'll return to my right hand leaving that finger empty until I get engaged/married.

There are so many different styles of rings these days that depending on what a girl likes it doesn't matter what her engagement ring/wedding band looks like.

best way to find out is to ask the lady.

That's always my assumption too Laura. I generally assume she wants to let others know she is taken, whether she is or not. Sometimes the ring can be a bit out of the ordinary though and I'll find myself saying something like, "Oh I couldn't help noticing your nice ring. Is that an engagement ring or a wedding ring?" :D If nothing else, it's a great ice breaker! (Of course if it does turn out to be a nuptial symbol, I'm likely to draw the conversation to a close sooner rather than later! As in "Really? Well I'd love to stay and chat but I have to go and stand over there...")

That's what it should mean. In fact that's the whole point of wearing a ring on that finger. I would assume that yes it does mean that, until she tells you otherwise.
