Anon -- It is good that you want to get in shape. Just don't make the mistake of trying to get there overnight. Dieting is a multi-billion dollar industry, but it just doesn't work! If you lose, lets say, 10 pounds, you are going to lose three things: Fat, Muscle, Water. After you go off the diet, you will gain back the 10 pounds, but you will gain back Fat and Water. You will end up back at the same weight as before, but you will be unhealthier than when you started. People in the diet industry know this, but they prey on vulnerable people, and make huge dollars off them.

Just some quick pointers:

If you want to lose weight, you will need to cut out unhealthy snacks and sodas. If you drink a lot of juice, that's also high in sugars, and isn't much better than drinking pop with added vitamin C. The best alternative is water. Then you need to talk to your parents about feeding you more unprocessed foods, and less unhealthy fats. Cardio is very important. Take every opportunity to walk instead of the bus, or getting a lift somewhere. If you live in an appartment, take the stairs, and not the elevator. You should also consider lifting weight to build up some muscle as you lose the fat. You don't need to become a heavy-duty body builder. Don't eat at fast food joints. Cut MacDonalds out completely!! It's a good idea to allow one or two "cheat" meals a week though, so you don't become a fanatic, and start craving bad foods again.

Talk to your parents about this, and see if they can help with your dinners. If you buy lunch at school, you will likely want to start making your own healthy lunches.

Just a few quick points, and I hope some of it helps.

Anon, it is good to maintain the weight that is right for you, and to be in tone, not just to "look better" but for your health as well. First, and this is very important, not all diets work for everyone. People are very different in their metabolism. Don't buy into all the fad diets out there. A doctor that specializes in weight control is who you should see. He can test your basal metabolism, circulation, lung capacity, etc., etc, and get you lined out on a diet as well as an exercize program suited to you. Experimenting can be dangerous. Take care, Tom.
