reader, anonymous, writes (1 December 2009): Tilt your head slightly like you're interested in something, make eye contact and hold it (don't force it, but I think this stuff is easy for most girls). If he looks away nervously, he probably likes. If he simply looks away, it's hard to tell. If he holds it, he maybe just training himself to hold it, lol, or he's confident and likes you.He may also look at you funny, and say, 'What?' Hehe Ask for his number if he likes! :)

 Yeah, that would be random...and it would take him by surprise. It's really difficult to just ask someone out like that when they don't know you and you don't know the first thing about them.
Is there any way you can strike up a brief conversation in which you can mention a possible girlfriend? Something that would give him the opportunity to say whether he's got one or not?
If you can suss that out, maybe on the next occassion you could mention how you're interested in going to a concert, show, exhibition, movie, whatever but how none of your friends are fans and you don't know who to go with...if he's single and even a little interested he should pick up on the hint.
If all this fails and you just can't be bothered wasting time, go up to him one day, tell him you'd like to have a coffee with him sometime, give him your number and walk out. Whatever his answer...he'll be intrigued.
