I say something stupid and lose his attention! How can I get him to like me?

There's this guy that I like that I knew from grade school... I know, a long time ago...I want to get to know the person that he is now and possibly get him to know that I'm interested. I have his AIM screename and I've said hello a couple of times to start a conversation but it never lasts more than fifteen minutes because I get nervous that I'll say something stupid and I lose his attention. I don't know what to do next because I've already started these convos twice already and I don't want to seem bothersome. I'm also a little shy but he doesn't really know that so this could really be my time to shine...what would some of you do next? I don't want to ruin this:(

If you want him to like you, be yourself. try to keep the conversation going and ask him questions about himself. be charming and maybe invite him out to a casual gathering with a couple of old school friends including him.
