It depends really on the circumstances and what was said. If the lines of communication are still open then its every chance to apologise, get across that things were said in the heat of the moment and just try to be completely honest to him about why you did say it. Everyone says things that can be tactless or not meant, you are only human and hopefully he will see that

 If he's speaking to you, apologize to him. See where that goes, if anywhere. You will have to see at that point whether he's forgiven you, and whether he'll take you back.
