A reader, anonymous, writes (22 February 2010):

I've heard that it's more valuable if you take another course and then convert, as a) you get more skillls, and b) law is a very boring degree and if you don't become a lawyer/ solicitor /barrister after uni, it's not very useful.

It depends on 3 things:1. what type of law you want to do; 2. which country you will live in 3. What qualifications you have right now.

If you want to do international law then you can go anywhere in the world. You could even do the English law degree then go to the states to do an 18 month conversion at an American university as my sister in law in currently doing. The English route is faster to become a lawyer ofcourse because in America you have to do the first degree first for 3 years then do graduate law school after. In England you can start right away with a law degree. The differences with the two law systems are firstly procedural and the way the judicial process is run. Secondly English Law has strong Roman Dutch influence and is partly codified (which mean the cases are mainly decided on what the law says). American law is largely based on the judgements of previous cases which is why you often hear things like "Roe versus Wade" etc being invoked in other cases. So if you intend to practice law in America then its better to do it there because you have to know a lot of cases and it takes a lot of reading. Visit the websites of the colleges you are interested in and find out what they offer then you can make your choices.

Personally, I would go with the degree in the UK (but only if you know for sure that your credits will be transferable to schools in the US) since it gives you a rare opportunity to travel and live abroad. Not only that, but living in another country gives people a more broad and diverse understanding of not only their lives, but of the lives of everyone. This creates for a more open-minded/well-rounded outlook for you in the future. (Trust me, I'm from the US, but I currently live and work in Japan and it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life so far...)

If you are planning to study law, then I would imagine (since I don't really know) but my guess is the law is different in UK than US. So you should probably study where you plan to live and practice. That's really something you need to decide for yourself.
