A female reader, anonymous, writes (15 March 2011):

Please call your pediatrician, your OBGYN or the hospital you gave birth at, and let them know what's going on, immediately. They will help you, and tell you what you should do or try.

In the mean time, make sure that you are drinking plenty of healthy fluids and eating balanced meals.

Good luck!

A female reader, Abella United States +, writes (15 March 2011):

Abella agony auntPlease visit your Doctor immediately and ask the Doctor to check you thoroughly for the Depression that is hormonal and sometimes happens to new mothers.

This problem can be treated, and if this is the reason you will start to feel better once the Doctor starts treatment.

If it is not that Depression that can affect new mothers then is it interferring relatives? This is unfair on you. You do not have to solve it. But you can ask the ones causing you problems to stop upsetting the atmosphere.

I am sorry that you are finding it difficult. That was my experience in the first ten days for the first time I tried, but after that I got some support and it all went effortlessly well after that.

Has anyone been providing you with good support to breast feed? The things that I think help the most to breast feed are:

1. Relaxed attitude and the ability to find enough time to breast feed in a quiet place without interference from others.

2. Eating enough for you to stay healthy and provide enough of the right nutrients to also provide enough sustenance for baby.

3. the breast feeding mother to be healthy and not sick, and not 'getting sick' and not exhausted from working too hard and not under any form of stress.

Are you allowing enough time, and do you find a quiet place where you can relax and breast feed? Just you and baby.

It is also important that you not suffer interference from others around you criticizing what you are doing or how you are doing it. Your family need to leave the room where you are breast feeding.

Are you still feeling a little run down from the birth, as that will make it difficult for you?

Or trying to diet? Breast feeding is not helped if you try to diet and besides breast feeding itself will help contract your uterus.

Are you eating healthily? Healthy eating is very important. Getting enough variety from the essential food groups? Drinking enough water? Because all those things above can impact on you when you are breast feeding.

If you are vegetarian you may need to examine if you are getting enough of the right nutrients to allow you to feed a baby and supply enough energy for the baby and you.

I also understand that for religious/cultural reasons there are some things you possibly cannot eat.

And that you may be a vegetarian or a vegan?

My eldest has recently announced a new need to want to eat as a vegan so I have had to do a crash course on how to serve healthy food that is also vegan. I am finally working it out, but it has not been easy.

I think breast feeding as a vegan would take a lot of working out to ensure the food values and the right level of nutrients were correctly worked out. Has the hospital (where you gave birth) a dietition who maybe able to make suggestions on how to ensure you are eating the right combination of foods? To help you breast feed.

I am always more in favor in a healthy diet (not supplements) with lots of variety in different fresh fruits, lots of different fresh vegetables, wholemeal bread, wholemeal anything wheat based, calcium as yoghurt, custards, skim milk powder (skim milk powder has more calcium than ordinary fresh milk) protein in the form of eggs, chicken, fish and red meat (now I know the last one may be a problem for you), also various pulses (beans, lentils) and various nuts. Some rice, some cous cous, some pasta.

When I make pizza on a wholemeal base i add lots of saute onions, thinly sliced bell peppers, chopped tomato, mushrooms, cilantro, with the base being spread with a bolognese sauce topped with the above vegetables and then the cheese on top of that.

I also find ways to add in good nutrients into occasional dessserts - fruit salad variations being my staple dessert, but also caramel or banana custard, fresh blueberries with chocolate mouse, lemon pudding with meringue on top. But i don't do dessert every night.

if all fails you can move baby to formula, but that means lots of washing and keeping everything spotless so that no infection is introduced. And it is much more expensive than the milk that comes naturally from you.

I wish you all the best. Breast feeding is a really good thing to do. But if it becomes

too difficult there are alternatives to breast feeding.
