I've taken them all on board and I will put them into action when he comes back and let you no what happened. But I'm starting to realise that I'm probably just being a bit stupid because it's better to have a friend than to have someone who always just wants to have sex.

Sometimes we just take one another for granted after a while and i think we can become quite laid back about our partners to the extent where we may not miss them when they are gone a while but i think it is short lived if you were to think longer term here how would you feel then not seeing him?
If the relationship for you is making you doubt certain feelings then you need to discuss that with him but i think when he is back with you and your spending time together again you will realise what you were missing

Firstly, do you feel that your boyfriend can't be your friend?
Loving relationships are built on friendship. If you guys can't be friends then all there is is sex. So you need to figure out what exactly is making you feel this way AND why is it a problem for you.
