DrPsych agony auntHello again. Just because you are registered with a male doctor, you can ask the reception staff for you to see a female doctor within the practice. Lots of young women are shy about seeing male doctors about 'female problems'. You could ask your relative for advice as a qualified nurse - but I would say that you need to see a GP. A doctor could explain to you what is happening with your bladder and maybe run a few tests like excluding a urinary tract infection and referring you for an ultrasound to visualise what is happening inside your bladder etc. I work closely with the medical profession in my 'day job' so I can tell you they have see everything! Nothing you have got going on in your body would be a shock or a surprise to them...it is a very common problem and there maybe some really simple solution to this.

Why would you not want to see your doctor because he is a man? He is a trained medic and there to help solve your problems. There is nothing whatsoever to be embarrassed about.

i know 'sort of' how you feel, ive always had a weak bladder, and had trouble with water infections too! its so embarrassing when your out or trying to have a good time, and you'll be fine one minute, then bursting for the loo the next, my friends used to laugh at me cos i had this walk i did when i needed to go! so we laughed it off haha, but its really not nice, i never went to the docs or anything, ive just sort of got used to it, but i do suggest you go to a nurse, your auntie is probably not the best option, over your doctor with her been family, and you been embarrassed? maybe docs is a better option :) DrPsych gave you great advice, sorry if i didnt help much lol good luck :) x

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (12 August 2009):

DrPsych agony auntYou should go to see your doctor as it would be wise to identify if there are any medical causes for incontinence. However, you can get pads especially for urine problems from a chemist which will hide the odour (Tena?) and you maybe able to see a nurse specialising in urological problems who can help you to tighten up your bladder control using special exercises. Ladies who have had babies sometimes have problems afterwards with urine leakage so don't be shy, lots of women seek advice about this problem from the medical profession of all ages.
