A male China age 36-40, *ufeiwa writes:

I don't know how should I do.

I want to study in Europe, but I don't have enough money. I love literature and history, and I have finished my college lessons.

Now, I would like to find an opportunity to study abroad. I can speak some English. Maybe I can find a positiong to teach Chinese in Italy or other countries, so I could continue my dream.

In China, young do not have many ways to earn a lot of money, especially for people such as me that absorbed in literature which cannot bring a lot of money in a short time.

God, what should i do ? I DONNOT WANT TO GIVE UP MY DREAM.

Could you be as kind as giving me some useful suggestions?

Start searching for volunteer teaching positions then look for paid work to fund you. Never give up a dream make it happen with courage and determination. Try different pathways to take you closer...look at the journey not the destination. Good luck.

birdynumnums agony auntI think that you had a brilliant idea, teaching Chinese abroad. Your market is expanding, so there are plenty of people who wish to speak Mandarin outside of your country, in order to do business with China, so I'm thinking there has to be some demand there. I know a lot of Canadian students that went over to Japan to teach English, so you should see if there are possibilities for you to teach in Europe! Check with your College and see if they have any information on the possibilities of teaching abroad. Most Universities and olleges have placement opportunities.

Hi there. I am currently at University, and as far as I know a lot, if not all, of the Higher Education institutes in this country (UK) have scholarship and bursary schemes to help students who wish to come and study from overseas. These do seem to be, however, for postgraduate study on the whole, ie. MAs and PhDs. Have a look at some university websites for the funding opportunities. There is also a fairly recent phenomenon whereby some UK universities have set up a branch of their campus in China, for example Nottingham University. Why don't you have a look online to find out about these places, and try contacting some of them. They will surely have many links to the UK and be able to give some advice. I am not familiar with the Chinese education system, however I would imagine that if you have a good degree from a good university in your home country, this would make it much easier applying abroad, as competition for places is very high. As far as earning money is concerned, I think a university would be impressed by your dedication to getting some savings together in order to study abroad, rather than just sitting at home reading. That is the reality of things these days, although you will presumably need an excellent academic record as well. As far as going to somewhere like Italy, you would most likely need a very good level Italian in order to be able to teach Chinese there, so that is something else to look at. My advice is to get a good degree in China, as this will put you in a strong position to apply for scholarships as an overseas student at your hosen university. Good luck!

Try to find a pen pal.. there are swaps between students all the time. You find someone who wants to live in your country. You swap places and go to live with their family. You'll need pocket money and air fare to travel, so yes you do need to save. You could also think about doing voluntary work with a charity who is based abroad, like the red cross. Or think about working in the travel industry, air stewardess or working on a boat. The work will be badly paid and the work is hard, but it includes free travel and you can see some of the world and make contacts. It can be done, but it will take time, determination and hard work. You might have to travel to places that you don't like, to get to the place you would like to visit. Think about these areas and research them online and then contact the relevant organisations and see if they can help you out. Don't give up your dreams, keep hope alive. Who knows what the future may bring.

I really feel for you. I for one believe we should follow our dreams. My suggestion is to work as many jobs as possible to cover your expenses. Also look for buraries, thre are not many but go to the local library and ask them to guide you. Another alternative is to discuss with your institution where you are studying and ask them if you can work out a repayment scheme. They may let you pay over a longer period in which case if you have a job you can repay over a period of time. I had to work in a night club as a student from 6PM to 2AM 3 nights a week to complete University. I know the meaning of being dog-tired and getting things done. Don't give up. Its tough but perserverence will pay off.
