I'm 18 and recently graduated high school in NY, my parents decided to take a long long vacation to Colombia which I thought I liked but not anymore. I got here almost a month ago and I got braces here because they are less expensive here but right now I am going crazy, I am so bored here it is not even funny, we no longer have a home in NY because we are supposed to stay down here for 8 months so we gave up the apartment we had and now I'm staying with my grandmother's house and it is very different to what I am use to what should I do?

A female reader, birdynumnums Canada +, writes (9 September 2007):

birdynumnums agony auntSounds like a marvelous opportunity to catch up on all the reading, hobbies and other things that you haven't had time to do in the past. You are a high school graduate, so you are obviously smart enough to entertain yourself. BUT, What about things around the house that your grandmother is no longer capable of? She may want a room painted or shelves hung. You'll be learning new skills, helping out your grandmother, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the feeling of accomplishment that you will have - both from a job well done AND by helping your grandma. Get her to teach you how to cook and shop for the household. Do laundry. It's boring sometimes, but you'll be an independant young woman if you let her teach you HER lifetime of skills. You can find out how to cook all the family recipes. You will be the only one in university Without pink underwear and t-shirts (she'll explain it). You could even learn how to balance a checkbook or how to start saving for the future. There are loads of things that you could learn from your Grandmother, including stories about your families past. Get your Grandma to talk and you can transcribe or video your family background. You may think that it is 'dry' now, but you will be happy with it after you have children of your own to pass on to these stories to. There is gardening outside in the fresh air. If you don't sew, perhaps she could teach you - that's another skill that will last a lifetime.

Every problem is an opportunity.

You may never live with someone of this generation again. Believe it or not, the time will pass quicker than you know, especially if you keep busy. Make the most of it! Let us know what the rest of your time is like and what you have managed to do, I for one would be interested in hearing about it! Take care.
