Husband's promotion of his car company has caused problems and I'm worried about being harassed

A female United States age 51-59, anonymous writes:

My husband has been the victim of cancel culture over something he posted on his business's website.

He runs his own car dealer, has done so for 15 years, but has 24 years experience in the motor trade in total. This current incarnation of the business has only been around for 2 years (it's what people would call a phoenix company, although technically, it isn't, he's just rebooted the company from scratch, having bought some other dealers).

He's been the victim of (a small amount of) cancel culture over posting to his car dealers' websites on the company's blog:

Car ownership is the future. Ignore the people who say they want a future of no car ownership and environmental hypocrites who want no fun, they're being sad sacks not realizing how good life is, we all know life is for living. Yes, climate change is real, but you can't let it get to your everyday life. Do you really want a self-driving car and the government spying on you, or big tech?

There are very valid reasons to want to own a car and to drive it. Self-driving cars aren't the be-all and end-all, and not the solution in the United States, and the local governments are crazy to think that.

Yes, a car may be idle a lot of the time, but so's that Amazon Prime subscription or pasta-maker or breadmaker, and no-one complains about that??

You've just got to enjoy the best of life while you can. I'm a guy with a disfigured leg from birth and some people think I'm a burns victim when they see me on vacation, but I don't wangst about it. The truth is, many of these people who want a future of no ownership probably wouldn't want it in reality. Be yourself, don't be a sheep. AND KEEP ON DRIVING!! Don't believe the self-driving car hype.

--------

He's had criticism from influencers and social media over this.

It's not breaking company policy as he's the owner of the business.

His business is a mom-and-pop business although he has six sites trading under four different names (only two are original that he founded, the rest he bought), and a dealer over in West Virginia, and a dealer in Florida.

I wonder why these people want to "cancel culture" him, he hasn't been racist, sexist, he's just told it like it is hasn't he?

Does he have a point to this?

Normally the blog is a sales tool to promote company news, and is part of his dealer's site, but he did this as a one-off.

He's worried it could affect his business and hit sales badly.

He didn't do this to be edgy, it was just a one-off thing.

Now he's worrying people could find his address and harass him over this.

Who's in the right here and wrong?

Not saying I disagree with my husband's actions, maybe there are valid points, I'm worried about our security.

I'm a 48-year-old woman who needs some advice.

Typo correction:

"If you get caught-up trying to hit people over the head with your political-views; expect the advocates and trouble-makers to make you a target."

P.S.

Come-on! There are a lot of digs loaded into their company blog, and he expected no backlash?!!! No matter how subtle or clever; seems everyone has a chip on their shoulder, or they're looking for something or someone to pile-on!

There's a hostile world out there with the might of the internet. If you voice your opinions even with a hint of politics; expect rabid-rebuttal, backtalk, and refutation.

We get it here at DC all the time! We make sure we are sensitive to the political atmosphere and how volatile certain topics are. If you go there, they'll come for you!

We have monitors to control the temperature and review the rhetoric and temperament of what gets published online. People can be vicious! This is an opinion site.

Tell me? Who doesn't get picked-on these days?

This crap about "woke-ness" and "cancel culture" are just among a bunch of divisive jargon and catch-phrases popularized by politics and hate-mongers posing as journalists and news reporters. It has everybody at each-others throats!

If you're trying to sell things to the public, you're a celebrity, author, politician, or entertainer...guess what? The public who puts money in your pockets by purchasing your merchandise, buying your books, voting for you, and buying tickets to see you perform will sometimes turn on you! If he's a business-man, he surely knows that. If it's not the public, he's swimming with the sharks who are his competitors!!!

There are many storms in life that we must endure. This world is made of good and bad people. People of wealth and influence bear great responsibility; because their money and power gives them access to the seats of power, influence over politics, the environment, and the livelihoods of people. In some instances, they even wield the power of life and death!

He can change the wording if it draws the attention of people who harass or challenge his ethics. Listening to the public is what increases your wealth and the success of your business. If you get caught-up trying to hit people over the head with your political-views; expect the advocates and trouble-makers to make you are target. They'll hit back! That comes with the territory.

Thats a wholly unprofessional post to put on a company website. Might be something you post on your personal facebook or twitter account but what sort of company would write that on their website! Personally I would opt not to go to a company that posts stuff like that. Gives the impression I will get unprofessional service and mechanics etc that think they know everything, believe in conspiracy theories, deny climate change and dont listen to and value my opinion as a customer. Best you can do now is delete the post and hope that not too many people saw it. But the damage may already have been done. In future I suggest your husband gets a second opinion before posting anything to his company website.

Honeypie agony auntIf he worries about his politicizing his dealerships why doesn't he just take down the post?

It sounds like talking points with a political agenda. Whether it's left or right I don't care but I can tell you when a company (big or small) starts to be like or political people will react to it, sometimes like rabid dogs.

I think he should remove it and keep it to a PROFESSIONAL website and postings. Bot everything has to be treated as a soapbox for personal and political opinions.

Do I think people will show up at your home over what he said? No, but on the other hand, you JUST don't know these days. I don't think it's likely as most "keyboard warriors" before the safety of their own homes to go on the attack.
