dear cupid,

soo, i'm pretty sure that this question has been asked on here before, because i know a lot of girls who are trying to figure out the exact same thing. i'm looking for hair-removal methods for the bikini area...BESIDES shaving. i currently shave, but i don't really like it, because it doesn't last very long at all, it's a hassle, and it usually brings razor burn and other unpleasant things like that. are there any hair-removal creams specifically designed for that area?

another thing that i'm curious about is bikini waxes i've been thinking about getting that done, because i hear it's WAYY more effective than shaving, but i'm a little nervous about it. i mean, for one thing, having some stranger mess around down there doesn't really seem all that great. plus, all the places i've seen that offer bikini waxes are pretty expensive. the biggest question is, how bad does it hurt? before i started getting my eyebrows waxed, i was told that it was really, really painful, but i've honestly never thought that it hurt all that bad (i actually find it relaxing). soo, basically...how bad is a bikini wax compared to an eyebrow wax?

Fairy Doll agony auntIn my experience, the fear of the bikini wax is scarier than the actual event! Now, I'm not a regular at my local salon by any means, but twice, maybe three times a year I have accepted that it just has to be done. If you are going on a holiday for example, it is worth getting it done so that you don't feel self-conscious in your bikini for the duration of the holiday.

Because of this 'fear' I mentioned earlier, I have never had a brazilian wax, but rather a tidy-up at each side of my bikini line. This is more than sufficient I find! (Also, not as intimate, therefore a lot less unnerving as a brazilian). The initial tearing off of the wax strip is not so painful, but it can get quite sore when the beautician has to go back over the area a few more times to ensure you are left nice and smooth. But by the time your clothes are back on you are over it!

I've only done brazilian waxes, not just bikini. Brazilian is where they take it ALLL off. So here's how it went:

It hurts pretty bad right at the moment its being ripped. Immediately after the rip the pain is gone. So it's totally worth it!

The first time I tried it I was scared. The woman asked me, "have you had any children?" That scared me even more and I still don't have children so i have no idea what she was talking about.

But if giving birth is only that much pain, then childbirth is way overrated cuz it wasn't that bad. You won't need a painkiller.

Also ppl who do those waxes are professional. They've seen a hundred ginies before yours so it's not that wierd having them down there.

person12345 agony auntMuch much worse. I mean someone is pouring hot wax on very sensitive bits and ripping your hair out. It's not a massage! Much worse than eyebrows. I did it twice and can't see why anyone would ever do it, but it was the smoothest the area has ever been. It's better if you get it done in a salon than if you try it yourself, but the area was red and swollen for days and it bled after. I can see doing it for a vacation where you need to be in a bathing suit, maybe, but why do you need to get rid of your hair? You know it grows there on everyone...

Getting a wax is fantastic. I get a brazilian and I love it. It hurts like not other pain. My first wax I broke out in a sweat from the pain!! But, afterwards I realize the pain was well worth it. Shaving with me does not last at ALL. If you do get a wax be sure to buy some numbing spray from the beauty supply. It still will hurt a great deal but nowhere near as bad as it would without it. I do my own now because it is much cheaper.

I think its got a lot to do with how well you handle pain, i believe im a bit of a sook and i get a brazillian (full wax down there) and i dont find it painful at all. Its quick, effective, feels and looks great. It can add up if you get it done often and become expensive but i put it down as something i like doing for myself :)

It's pretty painful, but short and bearable. The first couple times the empty follicles would start to bleed. That stopped happening after a while and I guess my skin got used to it.

Ultimately though I started having the same problems I got from shaving. You still get ingrown hair from waxing because the pulling action distorts the follicle and the way the hair grows. Unfortunatley waxing doesn't last much longer than shaving either.

I haven't tried it, but Nair should be a little easier on the hair. It shouldn't cause the same distortions waxing and shaving do.

I went from shaving to waxing to laser to currently electrolysis. In retrospect, I wish I had just started with laser and electroysis.
