A female United Kingdom age 30-35, *ampchick writes:

Hey, I've been in a relationship for 3 years now with my boyfriend. We met when I was 16, it was quickly love, we're both very serious about each other. After a year I started thinking about getting engaged, I spoke with him. He hinted that it was lack of money preventing him. Six months later he started showing me rings and watching to see my reaction. I was over joyed. Two days later he told me he wasn't ready to get married yet but he definately wants to marry me in the next year. Its been a year and a half since he said that, but still there is no sign of comittment. 6months ago I started university over seas, I thought my abscense may have prompted him to decide but he seems happy just drifting along.

How long should I wait for an engagement ring to appear? I don't ever want to leave him, but I want the next step.

A female reader, Ask JenniHearts  +, writes (17 January 2009):

Ask JenniHearts agony auntthere is really no nest step. it;s realy the three roads

1. he commitsyou get engaged and ultamatly get married

2. you stay content with the relationship that you are in (you don't always need a ring and wedding vows to have a furfullin commited relationship)

3. you leave...(last option of course)

love comes in mysterious ways. you two could be together for ever and not be married but still have marrige qualities. or you two could get married and drift. or not bacicly you'll get from the relationship what you put in it.

hope this helps
