Are you from Canada or the States?

Most marriages can disolve if it can be proven that there was abuse or infedility/adultry. Also, in Canada, if you are in the process of divorce and find out you are pregnant...they will push the divorce through so the baby doesn't have to be born illegitimate (sp).

In Alberta, separation for a year but it is more liberal in the rest of the Provinces.

What state do you live in?? For example, I live in Louisiana. I got a divorce last year. We had to be living separately for at least 6 months before the judge would grant the divorce.

Bev Conolly agony auntDepends completely on where you live. In the USA, each State has its own laws, which range from about 30 days to 12 months of living apart.

In other countries, it can be one or even two years.

Your best bet is to locate the Legal Advice hotline (the phone book is your starting point) in your area and ask someone who knows your local laws. There are too many variables for good advice to you in this forum.

A female reader, Juliette United Kingdom +, writes (13 August 2006):

Juliette agony auntDon't quote me on it but I think it is 2 years just for straightforward no blame, or 6 months for strange behaviour, adultery etc. but then you have to prove it through a solicitor. You can count 6 months of the 2 years (this UK by the way) when you are still under the same roof, if you don't include washing your partner's clothes or including meals with you. Persoanlly I cannot cook my self a meal or leave out 'his' washing just because we are splitting up, but I guess if there is enough animosity you could.
