How do I stop family members from talking over me?

Tagged as: Family<< Previous question   Next question >>
Question - (9 May 2010) 6 Answers - (Newest, 10 May 2010)
A male Nigeria age 41-50, *ruce lee writes:

I have problems with family members because they don't listen to a word I say. I might say something really important, and they just talk over me or change the subject. They treat me with no respect.

I'm starting to feel like they're taking me for granted. The more I try to get my point across, the worse it makes things.

What should I do? Should I start verbally abusing them, or just let them talk over me? They act like anything I have to say is not important.

Next time.... the minute it happens just politely get up and leave the room. If people cannot be bothered to have basic manners then it does not matter who it is - don't waste your time.

bruce lee agony auntIt's my parents I'm talking about. I think that because they are now faily old 64 and 65, they act like they know everything and that my opinion is not worth shit.

Thanks all of you for your help. I will give them a taste of their own medicine and start ignoring them.

I'll see how it goes.

shania agony auntWhen you say family members are you talking about your parents? wife? children? who? Do you tend to raise your voice pretty loudly when you talk? or do you make your point in a polite way? If they are talking over you then you ignore them and read a book, just blank them...give them the taste of their own medicine. If they ask for an opinion from you then say "No comment" Some people can be so pig ignorant that you might as well be talking to a brick wall.
