These habits are easy to fall into and very difficult to leave behind. It's hard, but it is possible. You just have to make a conscious decision to look away every time you find your eyes wandering. One suggestion I once read of was keeping a rubber band around your wrist and snapping it when you look at something (or someone) you shouldn't. The slight pain will teach your mind to associate those stolen glances with pain, and you will start to unconsciously look away from those things.
But more than anything, don't break your wife's heart. If she refuses to go out in public with you because she's disrespected, then you need to take care of that now!

 Why not stare your wife down one day...don't take ur eyes off her. She is just jelous that u are looking at them and not her. She is probably feeling ugly or something along those lines. Make her feel special and as if shes the only woman in the world. Staring at women is completely natural from both sexes. men for looking for partners, and women for scouting out the competition...or looking for partners. Hmm....this unconcious staring makes me wonder if u are bored with ur wife. It happens to the best of couples and is completely natural. find a spark!
