Firstly, what kind of things does he say?
You could start off by talking on the phone or on webcam, that way you can either hear or see who he really is, because there a lot of people out there who do this for fun I'm afraid. And those certain people are jerks. However, you do get the nice ones. At least on the phone you can hear his emotion, which doesn't show in writing. If he is ofen complemented you, and listens to the things you have to say and seems genuinely interested, it could be that he does like you.
It is always a worry about meeting someone off the internet for the first time, so make sure you speak to him and see who he is. Then when you do decide to meet him, meet in a fairly crowded area and take a friend!

You cant get to know anyone from just talking on line in my opinion.
If someone doesnt want to meet in person, and only wants to chat on line, then i think its safe to assume they are just friend material.
