A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (22 December 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntEeek, what an awful situation to be in. Is there any possiblity that you can move out on your own? If not, try to do the cleaning outside their door, using the vacuum cleaner, first thing at about 7 AM, every morning. If she gets satisfaction from sponging off you and your mum and brother, just make things a little less comfortable. Put a little too much salt in her food, spill a drop or two of bleach on her best top or jeans, just a drop, mind you.

Tell her that your baby's doctor has told you that secondhand smoke is very bad for the child's health (which it is) and that all smoking inside the house has to stop. (This includes you, your brother and your mum as well.) Enable the internet blocking software on the computer during the hours she's home, and don't tell her how to fix it. If she complains about the internet being down, suggest she go down to the internet cafe if she needs to use it. If your baby is crying during the time she's sleeping, walk the baby up and down the hall past all the bedrooms, while trying to comfort your baby. Insist that everyone must be quite during naps and when the baby goes to bed for the night. When your baby has a really poopy diaper, hand the baby to her and tell her you have an emergency to cope with, then race off to the bathroom. If she leaves shampoo and toiletries around, pour some of them out, or borrow them yourself, and say brightly if she notices, oh, I didn't think you'd mind!

Okay, I think that you really shouldn't do all those things, but it is nice to fantasize about, isn't it? Maybe that will help you cope with her.

It really is up to your mum what to do about her.
