 First of all, do you know his name? If you do, then you can narrow it down. Ask your mom what your father did for a living, and if she's asking why, just say that you just wanted to know if '''wanting to be a lawyer--or something else''' was a family thing. That narrows it down even more, and then ask what your heritage is...and since you know what your mom is, the rest is your dad...Then you can search someone with all of this information.

Have you tried the phone book? Voting register? putting it into google?
There are also ways of checking birth and marriage certificates.
Have a look on the internet about tracing family histories. There are lots of ways to find people.
