How can I change my appearance without spending a fortune?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi, I'm 18 years old (turning 19 in just under four months) and I've been with my boyfriend for almost two years. My general appearance is that of a punkish, hippie(ish) Luna Lovegood. My boyfriend's into Kat Von D's and Liz Vicious types. I want to know how I can change my appearance to those kinds of girls without spending a million dollars. I'm not really changing for my boyfriend (although some of the passion we lost after our one year thing might come back) but I'm changing for myself because I personally think I've outgrown the Luna Lovegood phase. I mean, I love the characer and the actress but I can't dress like that anymore. I'm almost 19, I feel like I'm already growing up and maturing, I want my clothes to reflect that. I'm not into wearing business casual crap all the time, but sometimes it could be nice. I just want to look older than 15 and be attractive to not only my own boyfriend but to other guys as well. I'm not who I was in high school!

In other words, I wanna be hot with a few pinches of maturity and independence.

Huh... well, it's not that hard with all the products available today.

The good thing is you can try a few things that aren't permanent, because you may outgrow this phase later in life. that's why I wouldn't recommend tattooing your face like Kat Von D right away...

But you can experiment with hair color and style first. I'm not really sure what color and style would suit you better, but you can get ideas off the net. This will create the most dramatic change. You can always ask a stylist also what would suit you better and take some pictures of girls that wear styles you like. The important thing is to find something that you can pull off.

Second, make up. You can find lots and lots and lots of techniques online. The great thing is that you don't necessarily have to copy someone else's style, you can really create your won, but you'll have to go by trial and error.

As far as clothes go... pick stuff that flatters your body type. I'm not from the US so I don't know where you can buy clothes, but I think you know what kind of look you want so picking these won't be that hard.

It's good that you want to change, but remember to be yourself all the time. More than copying someone else's style, pick elements that you like and create your own, something that makes you feel comfortable. Makeovers are always fun and usually leave you with a boost of confidence, so have fun.

P.S. I think your boyfriend will love you regardless of your looks.

Hair dye costs very little and a good restyle won't cost nothing but will be worth it.

Make up wise, you can probably use most of your old stuff but do it differently.

Then it's just a matter of buying some cheap bargains in the style you want to be in and making the change slowly.

Sell some of your old clothes on ebay and then have a browse for second hand stuff you like in your new style.

Good Luck!! xx
