You will have to take the lead, but that doesn't mean jumping him right away. This means you will have to do all the asking out and be patient. A shy person takes time to get to know and they take time to get comfortable with someone as well. There is also another possible outcome. If he repeatedly hesitates when you ask him out or doesn't take to you after more than a few dates, then it's possible he doesn't feel the same way as you and is too scared to tell you no.
