 the only way to know he is single is by asking him or his buddy, bcos cheaters do ask so many women out at the same time so u cant tell by that. he might be single relax and go out thats what dates are for to get to know each other lets hope he will be open enough to let u know what his intentions are. good luck

Maybe he knows you are interested in him, and he is interested in you on some level as well. The fact that his buddy is going as well may indicate that he either wants a second opinion (you have to pass the friend test -- if of course his buddy has never met you) *or* maybe he just wants the setting to be a little more casual and wants to take things slowly. Of course there are many other possibilities, these are two that come to mind (from a male perspective).
In answer to your question, I would say it is a relatively good sign that he does not have a girlfriend if he is inviting you out to a movie. If you want to know, why not ask him?
