As for the comment on how disgusting it can be, I assume you mean with regards to cleanliness. In that case, that's an issue that doesn't come up with all women as some who engage in it are well aware of the proper preparations that are recommended for them to ensure an enjoyable time for all.

I think it appeals to some guys because it's a way to do something with a girl that no other guy has done. I think it bothers some guys if their girlfriend has done all of the same things they have done with other guys. It's a little like winning a consolation prize for not having been the first guy to have intercourse with her missionary, doggy, cow girl, standing, outdoors, oral, etc.

 I'm not a guy, but I have heard that it's mostly a combination of three things:
1) It's tighter.
2) It's forbidden and has a certain feeling of domination if you know she's doing it 100% for your pleasure.
3) It's very common in porn, so naturally seeing it all the time makes you want to try it.

For me it's literally the wrong hole, it's not as dirty if you prepare well.
It's more a "she let me do that to her" thing. A trophy thing like taking a girls virginity. It's something we equate with dominance and power, because we see it in porn. It's something most guys want to try at least once because most girls are horrified by the thought so when you get them to let you do it to them it's a huge triumph. "She let me penetrate every orifice" kind of thing.
It's the same with facials (the porn kind) there is no innate pleasure in it other than it's an act of complete submission on the girls behalf and that gives us a feeling of power and manliness.
You see anal sex itself is usually crap unless the girl really loves it and has done it before, it's awkward, slow and can be painful.
When someone lets you do something to them in which they only feel pain and they do it anyway so you can feel pleasure there is a huge sense of power in that.
