 Personally, I have two types of eye contact/smile expressions.
If I am not interested, I will smile politely and look away and not look back unless necessary. There is no point in leading a guy on if you are not interested. To give them false hope is stupid.
If I am interested I will maintain the eye contact, smile etc. Look away but always look back to see if he is still looking/interested.
