A female United Kingdom age 30-35, Hanox writes:

There was recently a programme on called 'is oral sex, safe?' During this doucmentary i realised that everyone has a virus called HBV. However, it is 5x more likely that men have a futher effect of this than women. If the HBV Virus is not treated, then it can become into serious matters, such as Cancer.

The HBV jab is given to all the females of every high school in Eruope.. This is also known as the Cervical cancer jab. It is meant to be very effective. But the only thing that i would complain about with this jab, is that the boys are not issued it, for this jab to be free on the NSH, death rates need to be higher, a tad sick, dont you think? If a male would like to recieve the jab, it would cost a total of £300. RIDDUCULAS! out of 600 paitents with Oral cancer, 500 are men. Researches have proven that 80% of us have had HBV but our immune system has rejected it from our body.

This kinda scared me when i realised that it can be caught by Oral sex, but it is not an STD.

I though this might be something that was braught to your attention..

Hope it helps you, but don't stop enjoying Oral sex!

k_c100 agony auntJust wanted to add this link so anyone reading this can get more information:

Just an aside - it is actually the HPV virus (not HBV).

I think more people need to be made aware of the HPV virus so well done for posting this, it is a shame that it has taken the UK so long to start giving out these jabs, I am only 23 but this was never introduced while I was still at school so unfortunately there is a generation of young people who have not had this jab so HPV will still be a big problem for years to come. The jab has only been around for 2-3 years in the UK, given to 12-13 year olds, and then a catch up jab was given out to 14-18 year olds.

HPV is a very different type of STD - some strains are harmless and are simply rejected by the body, therefore they never become a STD. But some strains do cause genital warts, and other types of warts and verrucas. And then the worst strains of HPV (High risk HPVs) cause changes in the cells in the mouth/throat and cervix - and these changes in the cells often become cancerous.

So HPV is often a harmless virus that has no impact, but it can cause warts, genital warts (an STD) or at worst, it can cause cancer. It is hard to protect yourself against it, condoms help but it can be spread through contact with the skin.

We all know that sex, including oral sex, is never 100% safe but as long as we are all aware of the potential health risks that is all we can do. Being aware is better prepared!
