 In this scenario he likes you even if he still tried. He likes you cause he wasn't just self concerned with himself. We all want to be wanted mutually so that it don't feel like you forcing yourself on someone. It's a time and place for everything.

 it could be looked at as a good thing. you were not ready he did not pressure you. he respected you enough to put his wants aside. other words he is willing to wait on you and not be so self centered of what he wants. he was not rejecting you but seen you was nervous, not ready. he is putting you ahead of his self,not wanting it to be one sided event.
