At the very least if a guy is calling another guy a player I would listen. Guys are not gossipers in general in my experience. If he is your friend and genuinley cares about you, then he is doing a favor by warning you.
Pay close attention to this other guy you like. Has he had a lot of girlfriends? Is he flirty to others? I would be careful.
