Not many women like short guys or even consider them as potential mates. As a short guy, I can attest to this statement. It doesn't help the situation when you've been repeatedly rejected, having been told by women of all different heights that "you're a good looking guy, just too short for me."
This used to bother me alot in my youth but not as much anymore. One solution is to approach as many women as possible while at the same time learning to accept rejection. Short guys must have thick skin and a very short memory, unless you want to be alone for your life. Self pity is the worst thing that a short man can hang on to. Women prey on that and will make your life miserable if you focus on your failures.

reader, anonymous, writes (26 June 2010): There are a few women who will befriend a shorter man.I would say most women does not want any kind of relationship with a shorter man.For an example if I am sitting at a bar in between taller guys,girls will talk all around me to the taller guys but never say anything to me.The only time any woman says anything to me is when they need someone to buy them a drink.I have given up even trying to make friends with women.It is a lost cause,because I always go home alone!!!!

Men have their superficiality issues too. But the difference is that males have been served a lifetime of guilt & shame about their natural feelings that they can't fight. They're adequately aware that their Darwin-inspired urges are to be treated as shameful character flaws whenever these preferences happen to make things harder for some women.
(BTW: I'm six feet tall.)

Sorry, don't blame women. Blame Darwin.

 I'm a girl and I find shorter guys really cute. In fact I'm not really attracted to really really tall guys, shorter is better if you ask me. I don't like when people tower over me lol. Not that I'm saying tall guys are bad or anything I just generally like shorter guys.

reader, anonymous, writes (1 October 2007): My cousin (who is quite tall) swore blindly that she would NEVER date anyone shorter than her. She's now married & her husband is a good 30cm shorter than her & you've never seen anyone so in love.
Another cousin, who is quite tall, actually likes shorter men.
And me? I personally am not attracted to shorter men - my partner is 6'3" --- but if I'd met him and he were shorter, but I got to know him, I'd have fallen in love with him anyway.
So there you go -- there is no definitive answer!! Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder!
