A reader, Rebecca Batchelor +, writes (22 November 2005):

Rebecca Batchelor agony auntProbably not a good idea to tell her as it may make the friendship you have with your mum's friend a bit awkward and perhaps even spoil it.

It seems as if you may have a bit of a crush and this is perfectly natural. It doesn't necessarily mean that you are gay but perhaps you know anyway whether you are or not by your feelings to members of the same sex.

The thing is, this lady is married which makes her off limits and this is very important as it would be better if you found someone who was available to love you.

The age difference, which could cause problems, isn't necessarily the most important aspect here. The fact that you want someone who you can't really have, is.

Try to remain friends with your mum's friend but get out and about a bit more with your own friends. Try to realise that, despite how you feel, some relationships aren't meant to happen. This lady looks on you like a younger sister and try to remember that.

Become a little more independent and branch out. Meet up with old friends and find some new ones. Before you know it, the distraction of doing so will serve its purposes and you may find someone who will return all the love you have to give.
