He's probably trying to boost his own ego by making himself out to be more important or desirable than he really is. Depending on who said it and the context, if a friend of mine said that to me I'd reply either "Half your luck!" or "Well, I won't keep you then.. off you go to your hordes of admirers. You obviously don't need me for companionship. Don't let the door slam your bum on the way out." ;-)

A female reader, Dionee' South Africa +, writes (21 January 2013):

Dionee' agony auntYes, yes, yes. He said that to make you jealous and trigger a reaction. People just say that to basically imply that you should feel 'honored' to have them as they chose to spend their time with you when they could be spending time with someone else. Also, people say that to make you bend over backwards for them because when they say such things, they know that you know that you can be easily replaced (atleast thats what they want you to feel). I don't think you need this guy and his attitude. Do you think that comment was appropriate? I think NOT. It was completely uncalled for, think about it. You knew (logically speaking) what he was saying, that's why you stopped seeing him I assume. You know staying away from him is the right thing to do, continue to do that. After all, "he is sought after and in high demand", let someone else (seeking and demanding his so called "love and affection") deal with his crap.
