reader, anonymous, writes (12 February 2008): If you can't say it then you aren't sure. I did this with the guy I met after a huge heartbreak. He said it, I wasn't ready to say it back. We stopped talking for awhile and I realized I did love him. Eventually, we got back together, and when I said it, it wasn't hard. Those are strong words that come out when they are supposed to. Don't rush them, they'll out when your heart is ready. It will mean much more to him if it is sincere.

 This sounds like a defense mechanism. Admitting your true feelings would make you vulnerable emotionally, and you are afraid of getting hurt again. You can hold off as long as you want to, but eventually if this guy is a good guy, your heart will become full to bursting....
