 I think it could work in case your relationship was not based just on sex. If it was, wait some time and then try to be friend with him. Friendship with your ex boyfriends can be something really beautiful and special. I suppose you don't want to be with him anymore. So if you don't feel that you're strongly attracted to him, i really don't see the reason why not.

 Quite often it can, yes. As long as you're not harbouring deeper feelings anymore for them. Otherwise it could get messy when they meet someone new.
I'm mates with 2 of my exes, but only because it doesn't bother me when they get with someone and vise versa.
