A reader, anonymous, writes (8 January 2007):

Umm, I believe 50% - 80% of people have herpes 1 (mouth ulcars) which is dormant.

80% of the population regularly kiss people who are infected with herpes 1. A lot of peoples immune systems can handle this virus for their entire lifes, bit like HIV (controversially)

When your cold sores are blooming you are most contagious so probably shouldn't kiss anyone and be careful sharing mugs etc.

On the other hand, share and share alike!!!

Lilly is so right. Keep away from all types of kissing. They are lethal things and best avoided at all cost because once you get them you have them forever. Take care

rammsteinfan agony auntI have to add this. If you have a cold sore and have oral sex with him you can give them herpes...which are now genital herpies(an std with no cure), and cause alot of misery on both of you! My friend's husband cheated on her...the girl that he cheated with had a cold sore...and gave him genital herpes to her! So just be careful..PLEASE!

Good luck and hugs!

CarrieMagdelene agony auntGood advice Lilly, and good question, writer! Cold sores are technically a herpes simplex, and can be spread all the time, no matter what the season, and if I recall correctly, never go away completly, just heal over. We had an outbreak when I was in highschool, buy my boyfriend and I didn't become infected (thank God we were in a faithful relationship!). My friend contracted conjuntivitis (pink eye) as well as four other people, and several got cold sores. Outbreaks are generally few and very slightly contagious when healed. Very unlikely that a little Abreva coldsore cream won't fix you up in a few days, and a couple days later, kissing's a go for sure. Good luck!

Don't share drinks, silverware, candy bars, or cigarettes, and ejoy life!

A female reader, Lilly223 United States +, writes (8 January 2007):

Lilly223 agony auntCold sores are spread through direct or indirect contact. While I believe you won't give him a coldsore on his lips if you kiss him on the cheek, I'd say that the possiblity COULD be there. The cold sore virus transfers from mucus membrane to mucus membrane. The cheek is pretty close to areas that qualify as this... mouth, nose, eyes. If he happened to rub his face, he could possibly transfer the virus to one of those areas. Just to be on the safe side, I'd avoid it if I could. I know from personal experience that cold sores do spread... I used to get them on my lip, I wasn't careful enough in washing may hands after touching the cold sore and ended up spreading it to my eye.... NO FUN!!! I'd avoid kissing him (as difficult as it will be) just to be sure he won't get one.
