i think some strains may disappear entirely but most go dormant for just about forever. But dormant doesn't mean never to rear its ugly head. Just that a couple out of one hundred may have an active outbreak over a given period of time. But since you have brought it up I think it should be mentioned to all parents that daughters from ages 12 to 15 are at the age that the gaurdicil HPV vacine is most effective. If you care and I know you do this is the time to get it done. It's not tacit approval to go have sex its just the time that it provides optimum efficaciousness. There are really zero side effects except pain at the injection sight. And for the first time in history we can with all confidence eradicate at least one form of cancer(cervical) in one generation. It doesn't work after you are infected. And its not as effective as you get older. By the time a person is 50 the odds of her being exposed to some form of HPV is about 80 percent. Not all are linked to cervical cancer but why play roulette with your daughters life. This is the closest thing to a miracle that the medical community has come up with since penicillin. Death from cervical cancer is about as horrible way to go that a person can imagine. And now it is almost 100 percent preventable. This should be right up there with condom use. In fact condom use doesn't always prevent transmission of the HPV virus. Sooner or later there will be unprotected sex. You want a grandchild someday? And condoms break. Has anybody had experience with the vaccine? Chime in and get the word out. I never hear about it and it will save so many people from so much heart ache.

If you are concerned about this issue I would research HPV on the internet, preferably someplace like WebMD.com HPV is a virus with over 120 different strains, about 12 or so of those strains they have found can be a cause of cervical cancer in women. In males however it is non-symptomatic, meaning there will be no symptons 99% of the time and it shouldn't cause any problems. As it is a virus, it can lay dormant in a person. As for if it can be purged from the body, i'm not sure. My doctor told me that it does over time "just go away" and that if you have a strong immune system, do not smoke, drink much alcohol and are healthy that period of time can be much shorter. This was over a year ago that I questioned her about HPV however, so I don't remember everything she told me. Go ahead and research it for yourself and if you are really concerned you can always go see a doctor of your own, or go with her to talk with hers and ask questions.
