Can a bacterial infection affect the outcome of pregnancy tests?

Question - (22 August 2008) 1 Answers - (Newest, 26 August 2008)
A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

My period was due almost 2 weeks ago. The last time I had unprotected sex was the day before it was due.

I've taken two at home pregnancy tests that both said negative. I also took another test at planned parenthood today that said I was negative. However, the doctor also informed me that I have bacterial vaginosis (a vaginal infection caused by an overgrowth of bacteria) and prescribed me some anti-biotics (along with some BC pills)

She offered me no other reason that I have not started my period. I haven't had any pregnancy symptoms. Can this bacterial vaginosis cause a false negative? Is there still a good chance I could be pregnant?

Hello,

I'm sorry you've been waiting so long to get an answer. Unfortunately we have no medical knowledge and we are not doctors. Please go back to your GP and ask them this question and if necessary ask for another pregnancy test.. Blessings
