Question - (9 March 2010) 4 Answers - (Newest, 10 March 2010)
A female United Kingdom age 41-50, anonymous writes:

I am 27 and have horrible upper teeth, I have just seen an orthodontist who has said I need a fixed brace for 12-18 months, I have always felt awkward about my teeth and want them straight but I am constantly worried what people think of me and being 27 I really don't want a fixed brace for that long and I feel like I will never get a boyfriend because I have fixed braces, I mean I will be like 29 when they are due off. I have asked my guy friends and they have said they wouldn't be interested in a girl with fixed braces. I also don't think I could live with all that metal in my mouth, I am not sure what to do. The orthodontist has said I could get clear fixed braces but I have heard that they strain really easy.

Carrot2000 agony auntThe same guys who wouldn't be interested in a girl with braces probably wouldn't want to date a girl with crooked teeth, either, so you their opinion really doesn't matter.

I am 37 and have worn braces for nearly 3 years and I don't regret it. Without braces, I was facing the possibility of using my teeth at an early age due to misalignment; I was willing to sacrifice a few years of vanity to keep my teeth. I still get attention from men, probably because I feel more confident because my teeth are straighter! Two years isn't that long at all and with the new technology, the adjustments really aren't terribly painful.

LilPixie agony auntNo matter how old you are, it doesn't matter if someone wears braces or not. If a guy is interested in you, then he should like you for YOU and not for your appearance. My boyfriend had his one for 5 years and it never caused any problems for us. To be honest, I didn't even notice them most of the time. I don't see why it would be a problem for you... And like the others said, think of the end results. You'll have nice straight teeth that you can show off to everyone.

A reader, anonymous, writes (9 March 2010):

There is something called "invisiline." It is a series of removable, clear aligners that both orthodontists and dentists use to promote an invisible way of straightening teeth. (I'm not sure if it's available in the UK- you'd have to check with your orthodontist.) There is also a way to have your braces put on the back side of your teeth, but again it depends whether or not your ortho can do that. Otherwise clear braces might be best. Even though you will have braces, think of the end results. Your teeth will be straight and you will smile more, showing off your pearly whites!
